FAQs

What services do you offer?

1

Academic coaching, executive function skills instruction, and college essay development are our main focus. We also have experience with parent coaching, consulting, and providing professional development.

Where do sessions take place?

2

We offer multiple options for sessions, including virtual, in-person at a public location on the NE side of Ann Arbor, in your home, or a hybrid of these choices. Note that in-home sessions come with an additional charge based on distance, starting with +$25 per session.

How is this different from tutoring?

3

Tutors specialize in specific content knowledge; our focus is on skills that can be applied to all areas of academics/life. In addition to executive functions, we are also trained and experienced in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), a crucial tool for supporting the avoidant/shut down student, and a powerful way to help build a student’s metacognition, essential for true independence.

Isn’t this just what I do as a parent?

4

This work might resemble a “homework helper,” but intentional instruction is constantly taking place. We nimbly apply a range of methods and tools to any and all schoolwork, employ CBT when faced with resistance or frustration, provide scaffolding while regularly assessing readiness for more independence. Perhaps most importantly of all, we bring enormous relief to families who have been stuck in patterns of conflict and tension around schoolwork, allowing parents to stop being the “homework tyrant” and return to being Mom and Dad!

You only work with students once a week? But they get homework every day.

5

We are happy to discuss session frequency. Students/parents receive a session summary after every meeting. In-between sessions, we communicate with students via both email and text message. Parents are added to threads to provide background accountability, though the goal and expectation is that only students respond and engage in our ongoing back-and-forth. The accountability structures we guide students to utilize include schedule-send emails, habit stacking, calendar reminders and alarms, etc. Students are externally and actively reminded of the skills we are working on, even while working on their own.

No. Admissions committees read thousands of essays; trust that they are extremely sensitive at gleaning student voice and authenticity. More so than ever, it is crucial that students write independently to maintain their unique personality in their essay, and work with an expert to help craft and edit a genuine, memorable essay.

Won’t the college essay become obsolete with AI?
